Want a GPS? Check out this new Garmin PDA-based model

Check out this brand-new Palm Pilot-based model out from Garmin that smokes the GPS 5 I had been lusting over... it includes standard Palm OS 5 PDA functions as well as turn-by-turn auto-routing and audible voice prompts.

More info at http://gpsnow.com/gm3600.htm

$549 with an additional 256MB memory chip, $400 without it. It's substantially cheaper than the GPS III Street Pilot that was similar in functionality.

It's a bit beyond me right now Sergey, my limited Jeep-money would be better spent in other areas at this point. It just looked like a really neat product that I thought would be interesting to some. I have an old aeronautical Garmin GPS I carry around in the back of the Jeep that could be used in a pinch if needed.

So, for all the times Jerry did it, he never got it? That's pretty impressive. Or lucky, I guess.

Doubtful since it's nothing more than a Palm PDA. A waterproof GPS like Garmin and Magellan both make would have a big ruggedness edge on it for sure.

Thanks. I knew it's going for $400 now but that is $75 more than it was last month when Garmin had a $75 rebate offer going. I've just been putting too much $$ into the TJ (rear disk brakes, f/r axle shafts, hubs, etc.) lately to ask my wife for more money for a GPS at this point.

I only posted the link to the new PDA-based GPS because it is pretty cool technology.

Is it dust and high heat resistant?

Will it take the constant vibration of washboard roads?

It's too new to know very much about it yet Garry. All I can say is that my old Garmin GPS has been very good for over ten years now, the reviews on this new PDA version have been top notch, and Garmin's products have always been first-rate. I'd expect this to be a good product too but how well it withstands shock and washboard roads remains to be seen. I wouldn't think it would hold up as well to that environment as non-PDA based products would.

Pharos PF022 GPS for Pocket PCs 227.94 minus $50 rebalte at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/re...35076/sr%3D8-1

Price After Rebates: $177.94 Sounds cool, if you already have a compatible Pocket PC.
http://www.pharosgps.com/

Here is a very good resource listing different Pocket PC GPS options:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/wince.htm

I am thinking about mounting a Blue Tooth GPS in the jeep, and then I should have the flexibility to use any Blue Tooth compatible hand held or laptop or computer with mapping software, and stuff...
