Post Hey Frank.....

I was reading your Air Rock book and noticed in one of the pics you have cross drilled and slotted front rotors.....

Tell me about your front brakes.

Or link me to the write up?

The WJ brakes are a little more involved than what I want to do, so some ideas for some standard 30 brake upgrades would be nice.

Hi Allen,

Try J.C. Whitney for the cross drilled and slotted rotors. This is not where mine came from but I can tell you they are EXACTLY the same part.

I got mine as a gift from a client of mine for testing some ceramic brake pads a few years back, prior to any of them being available. The client never brought them to market and did require me to return the pads. They did however let me keep the disks which I know are cast and made in America. (read that (not composite)

About one year ago a friend came over looking for help on his brakes. He had a set of J.C. Whitney Drilled and Slotted rotors, as well as Performance Friction pads.

As I looked at the box the rotor came it, looked on my shop shelf at the boxes my old rotor where sitting in and compared the part numbers. They were exactly the same.

So in this case, for your high tech answer Check out J.C. Whitney!

My rotor show almost no sign of wear at all. I am however using Raybestos (spelling?) Ceramic pads on mine since I had to give the prototype pads back. I believe I have about 40 to 45K miles on them and look good as new.

Please understand, while my Jeep is very heavy most of the time I do not have huge tires on it, just 32's. When I put 35's on I would have to say this braking system is marginal at best. I do think the Performance Friction Pads do a better job with bigger meats to stop. That's a lot of extra rotating (tire) mass to stop.

To date I have had zero issue with mud clogging the holes or slots. Some folks say this happens but I haven't experienced it at all.

All in all, I can't say they work any better then standard rotors. Maybe they do, but it's not very noticeable. I do think they wear better then the stock composite rotors. I went through a set of stock rotor in about 40k miles. As I said these look brand new after that amount and after checking with a micrometer every now and then.

Hope this helps you out.

Frank

PS: I'm not home right now, if you need the part number on the boxes the rotor came in I would be happy to get them for you when I get back. I think I have both sets of boxes still out there. (I'm a pack rat.) Let me know.

Thanks Frank,

That was helpful.

I too am on 32s for now, but when I swap in my HP 30 and 44 and move up to 35s, I wanted to upgrade the front brakes in addition to the rear.

The WJ stuff is much more work than I wanna do, and there's not much in the way of upgrades for the 30.

I thought maybe you had run across something that was an actual "upgrade" that I hadn't seen yet.

I guess I'll wait and see what the Brake Master comes up with next.....
