CJ-5 build
I want to put a 350 in my '74 CJ-5 and would like some advice on a good trany and t-case (good, but not extremely costly) options.

I would suggest going to Advance Adapters site, they cover pretty much all the options there.

Thanks Tumbleweed,
I know Advanced Adapters has a good reputation and quality products. Ral, I want to put a manual trany in the jeep. The guy that was rebuilding it (but lost his job and had to sell) had rebuilt a GM tranny and Dana t-case. The rear axle is a Dana-44, in good shape, but i prob. will replace the front axle. He had narrowed a Dana-60 housing, but i did not get the shafts, rings, or gears. I suspect to finish this catastrophe would be more expensive than finding a D-44 with the same gears as the rear end...Also, I have had trouble getting a positive I.D. on the tranny. It looks like a Muncie 4 speed (Case shape) but were the I.D. tag is supposed to be---no tag! If any one knows this kind of stuff, i can send pics. |

Ral,
I have done some howework on the T-18 and the Muncie SM 465. They look relatively similar in shape and size. The T-18 was used in jeeps and the Muncie SM 465 was used in gmc and chevy. I have a pic. of both. Do you know if the T-18 will bolt to a gm 350 w/o an adapter? If not, will the adapter legth even out the overall legth savings? I have the bellhousing for the Muncie and it bolts to a 350. Look at the pics. and tell me what you think. |

Since you have a short wheel base Jeep, rear driveline length is important. The overall length of a t-18 from where the bellhousing bolts on to where the tc bolts on is 12.8". The same distance on a SM 465 is just over 14".
When using a Ford t-18, you have a couple choices to bolt it to you Chevy 350; (1) use and Advance adapters bell housing or (2) modify a GM bellhousing. |
