Unit bearing tips and tricks
This subject comes up on a forum at least once a week. If we had a tips and tricks forum, this would be a good one to put in it.
The problem- Rust, as in the bearing is rusted into the knuckle. Here's a pic to give an idea of the amount of rust on this front axle. That should give you an idea of just how siezed these unit bearings were. So, being that I am a big fan of leverage, I decided to use it to my advantage. Kat grabbed me a 2 3/4" grade 8 bolt and I rotated the axle until the stubshaft ears were parallel to the ground, had her turn the wheel to the right and then back to start wedging against the bolt. You can see the unit bearing starting to work it's way out of the knuckle. Turn back to release the bolt and move it to the other side. Practically effortless way to pop siezed up unitbearings out of the knuckle.

Nice idea!! I'll have to keep this trick in mind next time I come across a stuborn unibearing.
BTW: Did you notice the cool little spider crawling from the unibearing back through one of the holes of the dust shield on the last pic? Also - would it be okay to stop by tomorrow evening on my way up north if it's not too late? |

That's a great idea! I haven't seen rust like that since I worked on Jamie's Heep!

Good trick.
I made a copy of the message in the Technical Forum, and included a link in the Favorite Treads list.

A very good idea indeed, Blaine.

I saw something similar on the National Geographic Channel the other day. On one of the early break-out attempts at Alcatraz, some inmates fashioned a device to spread the bars (they were not of the high strength variety) by using a bolt and a threaded sleeve.
From the pics and the amount of effort that was needed to remove the unit bearings, I can see that rust sucks!

Cool idea. I had no idea that you would see that much rust out your way near a desert and all.
