Preferably somebody that has been there and knows where the trails are?

I've heard of 2- Odessa and Doran. What's the 411?

Dont know if I can make it but you can go to my web site and see the trails you have heard of. they are fun.

if you take the 15 just past barstow to the Calico Ghost town exit, go twords the ghost town the road will curve to the right. Just after you pass the town you will see a house on the right side about 50 yards after that is Doran scenic drive. turn left.

if you go all the way to the end you will be at odessa and the canyon just before the 100 foot tall walls that go to odessa is Doran.

you can go up one and down the other but I have gotten lost for a little while everytime I have done that.

Dave said he is going... we don't have to worry about getting lost now.

Where do you want to meet and what time? Calico is right after Barstow... Hmmmm where to meet...

The meeting place is the McDonalds at the Fairplex exit of the 10 freeway.

Time: 6AM, Sunday morning. Will that give you time to shave?

I was supposed to go somewhere for the entire weekend but everybody fell through.

Are you guys planning on climbing up Odessa or decending? The reason I ask is that you "bus" drivers will find a very interesting section of very narrow canyon about half way through. I have seen both a TJ and a CJ put a rollbar into the wall but then again, your wheelbase might help you in climbing - the hole at the bottom can get kinda big which can play heck with SWB Jeeps.

Robert, since neither of us has ever been there, any advice would be welcome!

I might add that neither of wants body damage. I understand that it is very likely on some trails, is this one of them?

There are 2 main canyons - Odessa and Doran. Odessa used to be a bit easier and Doran was the tough one. It seems that the rains have had a bigger effect on Odessa but they also made the entrance to Doran that much tougher.

Doran past the first 100 - 150 yards is pretty much a cake walk but getting into it can get rather interesting The biggest rig I have personally seen on it is an old style Bronco although I have seen some magazine pix with Blazers and so forth in it. The entrance is probably a good 4 to 4+ on the Johnson Valley scale if I had to rate it which should say all there is to say on it

Odessa is pretty easy to access and you can recognize it as it follows the wash up to a very narrow winding section that is very easy but very interesting visually. Past that, there used to be a squeeze boulder that was rather tame the last time I was there but if that is no longer the case, you guys will need rocker protection. There are 2 main waterfalls, the first which is mild and the second of which goes accesses a very narrow section of canyon. There used to be a road through there and you can see some remaining asphalt hanging up on what would be your right side if you were climbing it. The walls are very closer here. The rains seemed to have washed out the entrance at the bottom which may require rock stacking. With a longer wheelbase, climbing might not be so much of an issue for you guys but you will have to watch it as the hole tilts you into the wall - if it gets to "interesting" for you guys, you can always turn around below it as there is room.

I would say try climbing Odessa and stay away from Doran unless you want to get hardcore about it. I would also say that the trip itself is worth it, the scenery is very strange with all the mine tailings and there are in fact mines to explore if you are into that. I have been down 3 levels in the main mine that is accessed in Mule Canyon Wash. Speaking of which, you need to pass the Ghost Town entrance on your left and then take the next left into the wash (Mule Canyon) to access these trails.

Scott--
Odessa was a lot of fun. I was the only grand and had the hardest time getting through that tight spot on odessa. Got some new beauty marks, but only one tiny scratch on my fender, but worked my bumpers and rockers pretty good. Me and two tacomas made an attemt at doran, but it was obvious that 35's and lockers were in order for the begining of Doran. Over all is was a fun day, except for a little incident inside a mine, but I will let Alex chime in on that one.
