rear alignment tips and tricks
I'm going to swap in some 4.5" rear springs to see how they workout and realign my rear axle at the same time.
I have in my mind the steps I've done in the past, but I'd love to find a more predictable sequence. Can the collective brain trust discuss this again? My lift is a R/E long arm with adjustable upper and lower arms. Trackbar is adjustable with a heim at the axle. The axle side mount has a R/E relocator, is welded up to the stock mount and reinforced. Things that would help me are tips for sequence of setting things up, best places to measure for centering the axle left right and and getting the thrust angle correct. Tools I have that I've used in the past are: tape measure angle finder level plump bob Any other tools required (short of an alignment rack)? thanks, - Dan ps: I also have a laser level with a 90 degree output capabilty, but I'm not sure if it has any use in this job, but I'm looking for a reason to use it other than leveling the wall hangings in the house

no advice?
The first time I did this it took seemingly f-o-r-e-v-e-r to get it right. seemed like every time I changed one thing, another measurement went sideways. I'd make what seemed to be the correct change, but after getting weight on the wheels it was wrong...

Are you swapping from 5.5" to 4.5" springs? If so and assuming that the axle is currently lined up correctly, I'd just do the swap and forget it, adjusting the pinion angle if needed to get rid of any new vibes. Changing the springs 1" would have about the same effect on ride height as having two adults sit in the back seat. I wouldn't worry about it or put that much effort into it.
For getting the pinion angle lined up I used to use the angle finder and be all anal about it. After putting in my Full Traction long arm lift, Blaine just eyeballed it and it works just fine. For the side to side measurment I think we just measured off of a plumb bob. and were good to go.
