Odyssey Battery Top Cover

Does anybody know if it is critical not to compromise integrity of an Odyssey battery top cover? I know it’s a sealed battery, but is the top cover part of the seal?

Basically, I want to attach an ANL fuse holder to the top of an Odyssey 31-PC2150S with four #6 self-pierce sheet metal screws This is for stationary, vibration free application; I don’t need it to hold strong, Velcro tape would do, I just want it to look nice, and for the fuse box to be removable to facilitate battery replacement.

Are you building a motorized potato masher?

Would a good silicone adhesive not work for that Sergey?

I built a reserve power supply for a rough vacuum pump (Edwards 18).

There is a cascade of two turbo pumps downstream from the vacuum pump, and when the electricity goes down, as the rough pump quits, the turbo pumps don’t have a chance to spin down, and the turbine blades just get destroyed. Those turbo pumps are expensive, so I built this system to keep the rough pump going for a few minutes after power loss.

I utilized the following:

Tripp Lite APS2012 2000W 12V DC to AC Inverter with Automatic Line-to-Battery 100/25-Amp Charger

Odyssey 31-PC2150S Heavy Duty Commercial Battery

…and some big-ass cables.

The ANL fuse holder just lies on top of the battery. It is held up by cables very well, but tends to shift just slightly. My hands are itching to screw it down. Adhesive will certainly work; I just want it to be removable, so that I can replace the battery easily.

Maybe those 3M Command Strips? LOL

Talking

Oh, and the funniest part: the UPS guy asked for my help when he was unloading the Odyssey. It weighs 83 pounds.

Can you modify the battery hold down like the one on the odessy to the right holding the solenoid?

That would be a good option if I had the battery hold down. The battery is just sitting on the floor.

Thumbs up

My reserve power supply got the real test today. We had a power outage lasting about 40 minutes. The rough pump transitioned to battery power with no interruption, this allowed the turbo pumps to spin down gradually ? over ten thousand dollars worth of equipment saved.

Once the power was restored the system transitioned back to utility feed and started recharging the battery. The rough pump never stopped through the ordeal.

In theory, if the outage continued, as the voltage from the battery was dropping the current would be going up, and once exceeding a certain threshold the fuse would have blown. I have not gotten to see this in action, as power got restored when the battery still had juice. I did not have to touch a single switch on the power system, everything worked automatically.

My office server computer worked for about 15 minutes, before hibernating itself to sleep. And I have a third UPS on the Internet connection equipment and WiFi. It was interesting to see, how normally overloaded WiFi band around here cleared up completely and the only hill on the WiFi analyzer was my proud WiFi network. Everybody?s around smart phones started trying to connect to my WiFi network, but they could not, as it is protected.

Hey Sergey, what did you end up using to hold your fuse?

I reckon you're the sort of guy who should always have some of this stuff close by...

Ha ha ha, good one. I still have not used anything to hold the box down. But since the wires are so ridged (40-square-millimeter cross-section) the box kind of does not want to move much on its own.

Just curious Sergey, but what is the larger application? It sounds something like a multi-stage vacuum system for a lyophilizer.

Yep. It is a multi-stage vacuum system, but for a Mass Spectrometer.
