Unhappy CJ7 on fire ... aftermath

Hello all,

as stated in a recent post I bought a new (to me) '83 CJ7.
Last Friday I flew into Green Bay, WI to pick it up and pretty much within the first 10 miles it caught on fire
At first I tried to extinguish the fire with the water I still had left in a bottle, but that didn't quite do it ... then I started to try and wave people down for them to help me out ... and luckily a fellow-Jeeper stopped and had a fire extinguisher with him. So then the fire was put out in no-time
Here are the aftermath pix
CJ7 on fire ... the aftermath

hopefully the damage won't be too big (I'm gonna have it assessed on Tuesday).
I'm even hoping that the damage can be fixed before the end of the week, so I can still drive it back to TX (wishful thinking)

Thank you Jeeper in WI for pulling over and saving the Jeep (I had already removed my luggage, because I thought it was going to burn down to the ground)

And I know it doesn't even compare to the disaster that took place along the gulfcoast, but it shows that there are people out there, willing to help in case of an emergency

Bummer! But I'm glad you're okay!

You've probably already thought about this, but perhaps even though you just bought it, hopefully insurance will step in & cover some things.

Otherwise, it look like a nice Jeep!

Ouch! I hope the rest of the trip home is better than that.

If you plan on passing through the twin cities, let me know.

Your seller posted on jeepaholics how terrible he felt about that happening. Could have been much worse.
Good luck.

What a bummer!

Glad you made it out unscathed.

Any idea on the cause?

Allen

don't know exactly what might have triggered the fire, but it's definitely something around the carburetor. Maybe a fuel line got loose or something and then the paper airintake filter caught fire ...

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a bit more of an idea what the cost of repair will be
