The lockup on my TC is fluid controlled via an internal valve and spring pressure. It's pretty easy to control the lockup speed engagement by changing the spring that pushes on the valve.

My understanding is running with the TC unlocked will cause additional heat to be generated. Whether that is a problem or not is dependent on whether you can dissipate the heat.

Darrell,

Can you share the source of this valve that controls your torque converter?

Ahh, the two foot driving style. I need to keep reinforcing that I need to do this more often.

Maybe that is why my 35 has held up so far. I haven't been doing it enough.

FWIW, I two foot drive my manual all the time on obstacles, when necessary....and I'm not talking about the gas pedal either.

Stu, I can't relate much more than this. I got the tranny from a buddy who runs a transmission and differential shop (the tranny was his). They are closed on the weekends, but I'd be happy to call him Monday and see if I can get some specific details.

Yea, but you have a hand throttle correct so basically you just replace your foot with your hand.

Weird! It was claimed by the 4x4 mags and AA that they were discontinuing the 5.0 due to breakage and now they're debueing a 6.0?

It was in two magazines and I believe that Troy from TBT was told the same by AA. It's been common knowledge the past couple of months as far as I knew. I wish I could remember where I saw the articles.

That would be great. I don't have an auto but if the mod is pretty straight forward, it would be a good piece of info to have if I ever got to do a conversion.

I agree; Stu. Could you please find out; Darrell? Thanks!

Here's the scoop..

The earlier models of the 3 speed auto controlled the lockup of the TC via hydraulics, in the later models they wired it to the PCM. What they did in my transmission was swap in a valve body from an earlier model tranny, then made some modifications to it to change the lockup speed.

Thanks for the reply; Darrell. I thought I was going to get off easy with a 3-speed auto swap. It's sounding more difficult now. I'll have to see what Fred comes up with for Dan's swap.

Here you go. I stole this quote from someone on here, maybe you can find him and discuss this.

Moral of the story?
Never argue with determination!

Yeah; I ran into that guy once. I thinks he's aged a bit and lost his determination.

Actually; i'm thinking of costs here. Find a three speed tranny, rebuild it, add a deep pan and pay someone to adjust the torque converter lockup speed. Why did the speed need to be altered? Whats the correct CPS spacing? I'm drowning in tranny fluid here!

Fred dammit!!! Where's Fred???

It's all relative. I looked into a 700R4 at first, which made the 32RH seem much easier.
