any thoughts on amount of spline engagement?

A question arose over at my site, thought I'd ask the experts.

It's a 35-spline spicer shaft. I have another set of chromoly shafts on the way that I'll be running with my CTM's, so this set are now my spares.

Is there a standard for the amount of spline engagement a shaft should have?
This one had about 1 1/8".

Do you think the twist was from the amount of engagement or because it is just a spicer?

Is there a way to check to see how far the shaft is away from the cross pin once installed? If it's close, I'd think it was good. As a guess, if it's more than a ~1/8" away from bottoming out against the cross pin, I would think something isn't right.

I just measured a 27 spline Warn HPD30 long side axle & the splines are ~2.25" long and the engagement area is ~1 1/8". So in this case, the spline engagement is 1/2 the total spline length.

I know....apples to apples.

it's the long side, but I can't remember if he has a D44, or a D60...I thought he was running D60's front and rear (he just got the jeep a couple of months back).

That's pretty much exactly where my D44's OE axle shaft twisted on the splines before I replaced it, so it's probably the normal amount of spline engagement. It seems like there should be more spline engagement to me but with from that photo and how mine did the same thing at about the same location on the splines, it must be how the factory set it up.
