I'm never sure, so I get the ram situated where it's going to live, hook up the hoses with the rod end of the ram detached and then move the steering wheel. It will either extend or retract, plumb accordingly.

Is there a specific procedure for getting air out of a system with a ram, or just the standard procedure work?

Tires off the ground and cycle it until your arms fall off. Pick them up, reattach them and fire it up.
