For those of you that think you can weld

Try this one. This is the splined section of a pitman arm welded into a chunk of 3/4" plate to make a new flat pitman.

Thumbs up

Very nice! I'd be happy if I had half the welding/fab skills you do.....

What kind of welder are you using? I have a Millermatic 251 sitting in the shop....collecting dust, for the most part. Hopefully it'll get a workout pretty soon - need to fab a new rear bumper/tire carrier now that I have the 35's on.

That particular weld was done with an ancient water cooled Miller Tig machine. Seems like it still works just fine.

That's actually the top pass over a root pass done with 1/16th ER70S, the top pass was done with 1/8th in the same filler rod. The two welds almost meet in the middle of the 3/4" plate.

I am going to make another one as a spare just in case. I just want to check the travel first.

I figured you'd pop in and spill the beans as to whom those welds belong to. You should recognize the hand, you have examples on your rig.

I think Granny hung up her driving shoes when the bus moved out of state.

If everyone welded this well, they would not have a requirement for all welds on cryo-tanks to be done by a machine.

Blaine, you beat me to it again. I was going to say-nice TIG cover pass; but how many root passes to get through that 3/4" plate?
Damn I am slow.
Edit: BTW, did you slip that on a splined shaft while welding? Curious as to how much heat deformation you would get, in that small of an area.

Only 4 passes were used. Two from each side. There is about a 1/4" wide band around the middle of the splined area to locate it in the hole I drilled in the plate. I then veed both of them back at about 30 degrees or so to weld into.

If that was one of your welds Richie it would have been a Diet Coke can
