So...

How many miles does one need to have on a ring and pinion set (4.56) that they installed themselves to consider it a success so they can stop worrying they screwed something up?

All depends on how paranoid you are. After a few thousand miles and a few fluid changes with no metal shavings, chunks, bolts, or anything else stuck to the magnet I was pretty confident I didn't screw things up too badly.

My shop-installed R&P job lasted six weeks Allen before the rear axle started howling while offroad. They were Spicer gears, the installer (an experienced R&P guy) owned up to the problem likely being installation-related. With your attention to detail however, I'm betting your job will be fine.
