Beer Can chicken ROCKS

One of the first threads I read here was about Beer Can Chicken.

It made me wonder what I had stepped into.

Anyway, I gave it a try last night.

YUMMMMMMMY

in case anyone else has not heard of the craze that will surely sweep the nation, here is a thread.

http://www.jeepbbs.net/forums/showth...=&threadid=532

I only cooked one chicken. Big mistake. Next time I will fill the grill and cook several.

But I have a question first.

My can of beer didn't completely cook up. Should it have? I used a meat thermometer and when the thigh hit 170 I pushed the chicken over and a good portion of the beer was left. So, I just basted it with this.

Are there proper finishing instructions for this chicken?

btw, tonight its chicken enchiladas with the leftovers

I've had the recipe printed up for quite a while but have not given it a shot yet. Question: What's the best beer for this?

we do it every couple months, ofcourse on a college budget we use beer like natty light or something cheap. We normally cook ours over charcoal for an hour to an hour and a half, and baste them multiple times.

Personally I use the Coors Light Silver Bullet. It's a far more slender can, and I don't envy the chicken who's ass is getting ripped out by a beer can. so I try to help it out a little.

Secondly the beer never boils away completely, so don't fret.

Most importantly I call this meal "Ass Chicken" noone will ever forget a meal with the word Ass in it.

I'm thinking of trying it with a small turkey and a Foster's can.

Mmmmmmm delicious Ass turkey.

I said the same thing last night to my wife that we should try it with turkey but we would need an oil can sized can of beer like fosters.

So,

what about the beer left in the can. Is this normal, or should the temp have been a tad higher?

Thumbs up

It is perfectly normal to have at least 1/2 a can of beer left.
Take it from the guy who originally started the thread.

I've cooked it on my gas grill low heat, for as little as an hour and as much as an hour and a half, same great result. Chicken/Turkey is done when you can pretty much move the leg around easily. I do put a small peice of foil on the grates so it doesn't get too burned up.

It WILL NOT work without a lid. Just ask William, while camping we waited for about 4 hours one night for that little bastard to cook. It never did without the lid, a fox ate it later that night. Luckily we had delicious cheesy links as a backup.

Here you go!

Apparently beer can chicken has been big with the RV crowd for some time. I found this tip in an old Good Sam magazine.

Jeff,

Call me and I can give you specifics on how to do this well. I've made about 16 of them since December.
