Trailer transition
Got a lot done on my trailer today. For those of you that dont know I bought this big tex 12,000 lb trailer for a grand. Had two 6000 lb axles. Had wood floor and some pretty heavy ramps on the back, but much has been inproved. In the front will sit a Knaack Box thats 5'x 2.5' x 2" for tools and parts. The black bar that spands across the front will be what my tires sit up against. Still working on some lighter ramps for the rear and keeping the center open for custom built storage. This morning the trailer was bare down to the frame rails. The night shots suck.

Nice! I like the idea of a metal deck, but a full steel deck is just too friggin' heavy. If - or should I say when - the wood ever deteriorates on mine I may do the same thing.
With the camper loaded on the truck (~7700 lbs combined), the trailer hooked up (~1500 lbs), and Jeep (~4500 lbs), I'm sitting a hair under the GCVW of my truck...every little bit helps.

I thought my jeep weight was a lot closer to yours, but had it weighed last week and it was right at 3900 lbs.

I haven't weighed mine yet, but I'm set up about the same as Fred (StealthTJ) was when he checked his before putting it on a diet.
I've been thinking about using an aluminum diamond-plate deck on the trailer, but that would probably be a little costly.... Of course, just "decking" the necessary areas might save some bucks.... Gee, thanks. You just added another expensive project to my list.

Aluminum decking is almost twice the cost of steel

Looks good, Chris. New electrical pig-tail to boot. You're doing a lot of work and it should pay off.
My trailer has a wood deck, but I took a slightly different approach. I pulled the deck off, sanded it down, and used a two-part epoxy paint/sealer on the wood. I also took the opportunity to Herculine everything underneath to help prevent corrosion. My truck weighs 7000, figure 1500 for the trailer with box and parts, then 4000 for the Jeep. Puts me at 12,500 GCW, but I'm still under max. Metal tire runners and leaving the middle open is nice planning. Allows options, but not sure I'd save much on weight. Maybe just pull the middle boards out. Now you've got me thinking.

Might I suggest you get the taller toolbox- 2" tall won't fit many tools.
Looks good. Might think about some brackets somewhere for H2O jugs-since you have lots of room. |
