How tragic, the people on the ground never knew what hit them. That Navy pilot will never forget what happened to them, nor will he ever get over it. From witness reports, the jet was silent before it hit the ground so it appears he may have lost his engines. The good news is the pilot survived.

Now maybe they will close Miramar since the city has completely surounded the area/

You know the alternative for Miramar is 29Palms right? I hope they dont close Miramar. It would all but guarantee expansion of 29Palms.

Closing the base would not fix anything. You would have 100 times the air traffic in that area once the county moved the International Airport there.

No it's not. Yuma or Lemoore are better options. They already have the facilities. 29 palms doesn't even have a real runway.

And by the time the City of San Diego and the FAA got through doing all of the EIR's, review periods, necessary infrastructure improvements, etc - you'll all be wheeling JV in fusion powered hovercraft anyway...

(not an easy thing to move a Cat 1 airport)

You'll never see Yuma or Lemoore as a replacement for SAN either. Leemore would have to be "closed" as a NAS, then ceded over to the USMC - same as they did with NAS Miramar. Yuma at least is owned by the USMC.

Plus - who's going to travel to either? We have the same issue here at LAX with trying to utilize Palmdale (which "we" also own) - no indication of passenger willingness to fly out of there. Hell, we have a perfectly good airport at ONT (Ontario), that has actual roads that people have heard of leading to it - and it's getting to be a ghost town out there

What I think really sucks is after many years of an excellent aircraft safety record at Miramar, this tragic accident now has all the liberals coming out demanding MCAS be closed. And if given half a chance, those same knee-jerk liberals would hang that young Naval aviator who did everything right despite having lost both engines.

This wasn't the first accident in a housing area from the base. There was another one a few years ago, there was also an f14 that crashed on the old hwy 163 on short final for the runway back in 77 or 78. The military didn't fight enough to keep the city from taking over the area.
