Which part should I grind?

I?m installing a 4.56 R&P in this Ford 8.8, and using the factory installed carrier. I?m gonna call it a Torsen, because that is what it looks like. There are no clutches. It uses worm gears that ride against the side gears. That is beside the point. Here is my dilemma.

The ?pin? that that holds the axle shafts in place must be removable (in-order to remove the C-clips), but it will not clear the taller ring gear (4.56). I removed 4.10 gears and it barely cleared that ring gear. Should I grind the pin (more like a ?bar), or grind the gear teeth slightly to make it clear?

Two things. 1-The pin must fit very tightly in it?s slot. 2-Grinding the gear teeth is not as bad as it sounds, cause only the top-inside 1/8? on five teeth, need to be shaved, and it will not be in the pattern area.

Your opinion?s please.

Thanks,
Chris O.

Shave the teeth. On that area, as you said, its unlikely to reduce any strength whatsoever.

Thanks Blaine,
That is what I did and it worked great. I had to remove less then I thought I would. After checking the pattern, the ground area didn't get into the contact patch.

I dunno. What is a TracRite? That's a new one on me. Do you have an idea where I can get any info/pictures of one?

The reason I refered to it as a Torsen, is it looks like the units I used to install (way back in the early 80's), and, that is what the folks at Randy's R&P refered to it as. I inquired about a modified pin and they said none are available for the "Torsen", just the Trac-Loc.
