40:1 or 50:1
With a 6 cylinder running 37's which ratio would be best for all around wheeling? Rocks, sand, snow, mud, and trail riding

You probably mean 4:1 and 5:1 for a new transfer case ratio right? What transmission are you running? How hard are the trails you like to run?

My old set-up with 37's was 36 to 1 and I liked it much better for all around. Way manageable in the rocks, reasonably good in the sand, and worked okay in the little mud that I did. I'd pick 40 if I had it to do again.

I'm at 50:1 on 35's and the 3 speed auto....I have to run hi range if I want to do anything in the sand. For trail running such as that on the Con, Dusy, JV or Moab...I wouldn't change it.

Now that you confirm it's the crawl ratio you're asking about, that 50:1 fooled me since I don't consider my own 50.8 crawl ratio nearly low enough in the rocks with my 5-speed transmission. Both Robert and Blaine have automatic transmissions so their crawl ratios are far better in reality because of their torque converters than what the raw numbers indicate.
For my 5-speed tranny, 50.8 sucks for the really tough stuff. That's calculated from my 3.83 first gear ratio, 2.72 t-case ratio, and 4.88 axle ratio. But if you have an automatic and wheel much on the rocks, it seems like a 50 crawl ratio would be pretty sweet. |

are you asking in regards to a 5 speed or an auto?
I'm at about 53:1 with a 5 speed and 35s and it is barely low enough for moderate rocks and would be unsatisfactory for difficult rocks. - Dan ps: Jerry, Even though our trannies are slightly different, I can't tell the difference between 53:1 and 50:1 having driven both with the same size tires on the same trails. one would think six percent better would be more noticable...

even though it doesn't really apply to your auto situation, mine is: 70:1 (4.0, 5spd, 4.56, 4:1 running 35s)
