Howdy!
My name is Matt, and I am a long time Jeep admirer, but I have never actually bought one. I am now thinking about buying a used 1999-2001 Cherokee, and all of them have from 85,000-120,000 miles on them. I am nervous about buying a car with so many miles, but I am told that these suckers run forever. Can any of the learned Jeepers here give me some advice about what to look for and consider as I start my shopping?
Many thanks in advance! |

Welcome aboard.
See if you can locate one with the Chrysler 8.25" rear axle. The Dana 35 rear axle is well know to be weak. The 8.25" is much better/stronger. You can find them in factory 3.07, 3.55 or 4.10 gear ratios. 99-120K is something to think about but certainly nowhere near a rebuild if it was taken 1/2 way decent care of. My '91 YJ has ~121K on it & runs excellent.

my 95 yj went 217,000 miles before needing a rebuild, or even a clutch.
the 4.0 is a great powerplant. |

Thanks for the tips!
Thanks to both of you. How do I determine the kind of axle the truck has? Just by the model year? Serious newbie here, I'm afraid!

You can usually tell by the shape and a few characteristics the covers have.
Here's a pic of some diffs. The d35 is there. The Chrysler 8.25" cover looks similar to the 9.25". The D35 cover is oval, has 10 cover bolts, and usually has a rubber fill plug & hole on the passenger side. Some have a screw-in plug. The 8.25" is more of an 8 sided cover & larger than a D35. |

Quote:
The 8.25 axles were only used on XJs without ABS brakes. So, if the XJ has ABS, it has the Dana 35. Without ABS it could have either axle. If the XJ doesn't have ABS and you are still unsure, look at the pumpkin. The 8.25 has a flat edge casting on the bottom edge of the pumpkin and the 35 does not... Finally, if you still don't know, here is a sure way to know what you have under there. 1. Crawl under the side of the XJ. 2. Locate rear pinion yoke, this is where the driveshaft bolts to the rear axle. 3. Reach your hand right above the pinion yoke. 4. Feel for 3 bumps sticking up from the axle casting. If you have said bumps you have the 8.25 axle, If not you have a D35. I can't see what Joe posted or if these will even work since my work browser blocks most pics, but there you go: Dana 35 (Notice the closeup of the 35C casting highlighted in the upper right box) Chrysler 8.25

Again, Thanks, But I Have Another Question
Okay, this is great stuff. I think I can identify the D35 now, but I am not sure how to identify by sight the other one (Chrysler 8.25). Is one of the diagrams the Chrysler?
I'll also call the dealer I'm considering to ask about ABS--this information should be the easiest to obtain. Thanks so much. |
