Sleeping Bags

What is a difference between a sleeping bag and a down sleeping bag?

I assume this is not some kind of joke....

So....a down sleeping bag would be filled with goose down. Very warm, light weight, and very compressable.

Nope, it’s not a joke. I’ve been to the campmor website, and they have two categories, “Down Sleeping Bags” and “Sleeping Bags”; the first ones, more expensive. I didn’t realize that down was something that comes from animals, I thought that down was the opposite of up.

Least expensive place to buy 0* bags?

Since we're on the subject...

I'm shopping for some 0* bags. Best price I've found is on some Eddie Baur bags at Target, ~$80.

Next best price I've found is $135 at Tri City Sports.

Anyone find a better price on 0* bags?

Here you go:
http://www.dynadirect.com/sp-8455602.html

$54.00/ea and shipping charges look reasonable...

Where did you find the 0* bags for $49? Maybe I’ll buy a pair too, and toss them away if I don’t like them, instead of buying $200+ bags...

Sergey:
You really don’t want a down filled mummy type sleeping bag. They are more suited to back packing, as in minimum weight for warmth but suck if you get them wet or even moist. I have had a Slumberjack Mammoth #44110-J for about 6 months and I am very happy with it. Filled with double layers of hollowfil good to 0 deg., 80" x 38" for up to 6'6" person, color black. That night in JV when the temp. went down to 16 deg. I was all toasty warm. Well worth the 84.99

Sergey, Garry's got a real good point. You didn't say why you're buying it (general camping I'm guessing), but there are pros and cons to the material inside the bag that gives it the temperature rating.

The one Garry has, I bought one very similar for my brother one year. It's worked great. Also, 0* can't really be used year round without unzipping it or just laying on top of it. When it warms up it'll be too hot to use. If you're buying one bag, you might consider something like a 20* bag. You can get them warmer by throwing a Nalgene bottle filled with boiling water or hot coffee. Usually the water will still be warm by morning, and the heat will keep your bag a heck of a lot warmer throughout the night, even if the temperature dips lower than the bag's rating

I just bought a couple of bags from the Sports Authority:

Slumberjack Arctic Trader 0 Deg. 4lbs. Thermolite Fill Mummy (32" x 82")

and

ROKK Kenai Mummy 0 Deg. 2.75 lbs. Qualifil Fill (32" x 84")

$80 and $70 minus a $15 coupon code (TSAD010215)

I don't know if this is good or bad, It's got to be better than $9 sleeping bags that I have now.

To buy a couple of really warm bags was my goal.

I got one of them PowerCat heaters, everyone likes, too.

Edit: I was reading the magazine William gave me. If you take into account all they recommend, you would end up spending more than $200 per bag, so I’ll try cheaper way for now...

I'm interested to see the results too Sergey.

Reason being, for a while, not many companies made mummy bags, or high rating ones. You couldn't get holofil, or the like for a long time. Perhaps the technology has trickled down now and you can get awesome stuff at a cheaper price. Or perhaps, the cheaper stuff will sacrafice somewhere. How warm you are at Means at night will say the difference.

Yes, but you are allowed to cover yourself with whatever snow is in arms reach once you lay down.

It is impossible to ascertain the value of something until you have paid for it a few times.

Sounds like I'm too late, but here are a couple links where I found inexpensive mummy bags:

This one was like $49:
http://blue-mtn.net/clear/zeromum.htm

These guys have them from$49 up:
http://www.xpressweb.com/~sjackson/SLEEPINGBAGS.html

I lost my other links... if I find them I'll post them.

There are also a bunch of them on Ebay... but you guys better not go bidding against bassettworks!

See? SEE IT?

That evil Squirell and all his evil cohorts around. He brought them out to distract Sergey and cause him to screw up. Sergey resisited the power of the Evil Squirell, and watched his spotter, didn't flip him off, and made his line.

Squirells.. Rats with fluffy tales.

Yes, I also had the Peter Pan flying on the background in the original picture, but I took it off, cause I decided to keep it real.
