Do cats not like crawling?

I just took my Jeep out of the garage for the first time since the last trip to JV. Barely made it to the gas station and had to get jump started at both the gas station and the hardware store but that?s another issue.

The Jeep had very little power, wouldn?t pull a small hill in 3rd gear, and the exhaust note sounded like an air compressor blowing air Also, the last trip out to JV I started having the "bag o' marbles" sound coming from my exhaust.

Bad cat right?

I installed a new cat about 4 years ago and since that time I've put probably 350 hrs of crawling and less than 1 hr of road driving on the Jeep.

Heres my question...
Do cats not get hot enough while idling all day long to clean themselves?

Did you check your air filter? Who knows, maybe a "cat" got inside the air box.

Besides the basic rotten egg smell they tend to give off when not working correctly, or the typical clogged cat which gives too much back pressure, my understanding is that there should be ~75*F difference between the input & exit of the cat if working correctly.

Seems I've read the ~75*F amount somewhere at a fairly reliable source.

BTW: Shame on you for not starting it more frequently. I know....that's all you need is to hear some old fart chiming in scolding you...Anyway, hope it's nothing too bad to fix. Probably the cat though.

Yep, bad cat

From what I understand, there are two catalytic "biscuits" in a catalytic converter. The rearward biscuit came loose and blocked the exit.

Two bills lighter and I'm back in action

For those of you near North San Diego, I highly recommend WTB Mufflers in Vista (760-732-1021). Frank, there installer, did an excellent job on the replacement as well as the cat back exhaust that he installed a few years back. Frank is very knowledgeable and "friendly" with working around custom suspensions/flat bellies etc.

Joe, at exactly what age do you qualify for the "old fart" title?

My kids started teasing me & called me old fart starting ~7-8 years ago. So, I guess ~40.

I'm planning on replacing my cat before the Jeeps upcoming smog test. I was thinking of getting one of those fancy high flow jobs, then I saw this...

Please note that it is illegal to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter and that aftermarket catalytic converters are not legal for installation in California on OBD II vehicles (some 1994 & 1995, and all 1996 and later vehicles).

I guess this means I should get a stock type replacement???

Matt, what did you go with?

My Jeep dates back to before OBD1. I'm not sure of the smog rules, but the installer told me that I get to use the 'cheap' cat. From what I gather, OBDII cats arent cheap.

yeah, there was a definite price gap between models. I guess I'll just have to get one that's listed for a '97 and legal in this state.
