Writeup is done! AW4 Swap

http://members.cox.net/aw4swap

I can't believe how long this writeup took. I probably have 10 hours into it. I couldn't decide what to leave out so I went ahead put it all in. I think it was worth the effort.

Feedback is appreciated!

Thanks,

Very nice writeup, Scott. Did you come across any reason why an older AW4 couldn't be used?

Thanks.
Seth

Seth,

I'm not sure whether the throttle postion sensor would be compatible or not with an older AW4 and TCM. I'm sure the brake sense switch could be easily wired to accomodate the older AW4 as well as the park neutral circuit. I guess somebody will just have to try it and find out.

Just lights on the AX15.

It's the AW4's TCM that needs input from the throttle position sensor, park neutral switch, and brake sense switch. Without these it can't correctly calculate shift points. The AW4 does have its own input and output sensors. If you read my entire writeup it's all in there.

Hi Scott,

I just read your AW4 swap write-up.

Great piece of work.

I'm certain your documentation will save countless hours for other Jeepers wanting to do the same swap.

Well done,

Frank

Ok, I toned it down a little. Purple is going to stay, that is my trademark color. Yellow text is replaced by light gray text. I think its easier on the eyes. Print preview shows it should print out nicely, 66 pages printed out.

Comments appreciated.

I very nice writeup. Some interesting information there. Here is some I checked on.

The 98-01 AW4's have the input speed sensor and all the other before it do not.

The 87-90 used a TPS that was two sided one for the ECU and the other for the TCU.

The 87-90 4wd AW4's that came with a 4.0L had a 21 spline output shaft and 91-01 have a 23 spline output shaft.

The AW4 was used in one year of ZJ which was 93 with the 4.0L engine.

The reason for the t-case clocking difference is proably due to the differences between a unibody and a body on frame vehicle.

Scott,

if you need a place to host your swap page I can do it on my server. it is not the fastest but it is available. I can give you a web site there or you can just send me the files.

Just thougt I would extend the offer.

Scott:
Your writeup is so good that I'd like to either put it on my Tech Pages on my website or post a link to it. May I have permission to do both/either? I'm happy to host it for you as well.

ok, here is an interesting twist for you, is it possible to mount one to say a ford 5.0 HO???? I've been thinking about this combo for a while now, advanced adaptors has an adaptor for a 700r4 to the 5.0, but everyone is shying away from anything to do with the aw4, I've had a xj for years now and when it finishes falling appart, I think I'll build some sort of yj/buggie, so I'll have an aw4 to use...

You'd have to call Advance Adapters or Novak for that info
