Screw the splines... rolled it hard

Umm... Short story. 2nd shot at el hill at Los Coyotes. Got a bit right and front end picked up and dumped me onto my windshield frame and cage. We slid and dropped into a hole, where the jeep rolled ass over teakettle and wound up on the drivers side. Cage saved lives.

Pictures soon.

Sorry to hear about this. I assume that everyone involved is ok?
When a newbie asks what is the first mod-- tell them to put a cage in and don't cut any corners on it! This is a prime example.
Hope your repairs go smooth and well.

Unbelievable! I hope that everyone is OK. Were you able to drive your Jeep home or did you have to get a tow?

So how come you wanted to drive up El Hill in the first place? We watched many people almost roll on that hill. It must have been Muffler Bearing failure that caused the roll over.

Anyway, I’m glad that you made it home safe.

This is the first time I had it on both sides in the same roll. Near as we could determine, the jeep stood up onto the back right tire and slammed down on the windshield frame and cage. It slid down the hill into the next hole, where the cage stopped the movement and the jeep stood up on the back of the cage, and rolled over onto the driver side.

Hard to explain...

Seth,

Sorry to hear about (and see) your roll. That looks like a bad news hill. Good to hear no one was hurt.

You're probably not too interested in the 4" IAS shock info right at this moment, but I'll still try to find something out for you.

Seth,

Sorry to hear about your roll. It's not fun with the cost of the damage, but more of a pita to install every time consuming piece together. Most important is that you are fine.

If you don't mind I try to learn from all roll overs that I have personally seen along with other people that I've heard that rolled and have seen pics of. I personally have not rolled my vehicle up to this time, I sometimes wheel hard being aware that the possibility exist at all times trying very hard to avoid the mishap. I do understand that no matter what we try to do to avoid the roll... sometimes it just does not work this way.

Can you please answer a few. If you don't wish to discuss any of this here maybe a private email. Keep in mind that these questions are not meant to be demeaning in any way, they are just for my learning experience.

1. Thinking back to when the vehicle first went over. After it was all over and you were sitting back at home thinking of all that had happen, did you say to yourself, "you know if I would have done it this way, or had done this right before, maybe I could have avoided the roll? If you have can you please share this with us and what could have been done different.

2. Did you feel that you might have made any errors that could have avoided the roll while entering the obstacle. Loss of concentration, not being able to see, etc.

3. After you exited the vehicle and found yourself to be ok, how long (approximately) did it take you to bring the vehicle upright?

4. Did you check your fluids, any leaks anywhere? Which ones?

5. Did you start the vehicle right away or did you tow it back to camp? If not what did you do, did you remove any plugs, etc.? If you started the vehicle right away, how did it handle? Did you have any smoke? Did the smoke go away after a while and did you suffer any engine, tranny, tc, problems?

6. How did you feel as you saw yourself going over, all the way till the time your vehicle came to a stop? Were you bouncing around much?

7. Can you think of anything else that you did that might be of additional help?

Thank you.

Jim B.

Jim,
Good questions, I'll do my best to answer them...

1. What could have been done different.

Honestly? I could have lived to wimp again. I chose to run a hard line, where jeeps have been known to roll. I was too far to the right and when it went, it went.

2. Did you feel that you might have made any errors that could have avoided the roll while entering the obstacle.

No. I was concentrating fully. I thought I had control until I did not.

3. After you exited the vehicle and found yourself to be ok, how long (approximately) did it take you to bring the vehicle upright?

Beats me... probably no more than 30 minutes. It wasn't a simple extraction so it took a bit to get everything organized (winch bag, anchor, etc...) But once it was being winched, it popped right over.

4. Did you check your fluids, any leaks anywhere?

I checked ALL of them for leaks.... The only one that leaked was the rear axle through the breather tube. Just the angle of the dangle

5. Did you start the vehicle right away or did you tow it back to camp? If not what did you do, did you remove any plugs, etc.? If you started the vehicle right away, how did it handle? Did you have any smoke?

After righting it, we pulled the plugs and blew out the oil... of which there was plenty in the back 4 cylinders. What a freakin' mess. I will be doubly sure to have a plug wrench, gapped plugs, and wires in my box always. They get too dirty too fast. The smoke went away after about an hour. No idea on any other damage yet

Can you think of anything else that you did that might be of additional help?

Don't do el hill. Its steep, loose, and took my jeep.

What can I tell you jim? I was wheelin', I commited to a line and it didn't work.

Seth,
Thanks for answering.

A few more clarifications if you would. I gathered that you pulled the plugs right away without even trying to starts the engine, correct? Good to hear on the no damage to engine, etc so far.

Were you using the stock seat belt and if you were did you have the shoulder strap were it was supposed to be? I sometimes make it a bad habit to pull it behind me so that I can lean and be able to see some of the lines.

How did the stock seat belt do for you, did it keep you in place pretty good until the vehicle stopped?

Thanks.

Jim,
No. I use a 3" Simpson Lap belt. I was free in absolutely no time. 2nd best investment I made.... the cage being a strong #1.

http://www.simpsonraceproducts.com/r...latchtype.html

They're run through the floor using an Eye bolt provided by Simpson.

As for the engine, she sat as you see her in the pics for a while. We just pulled the plugs before trying to start it.

Seth, just so I'm clear on this. You use the lap belt only, not using the stock belt at all? Also, the page you have linked looks to me like two designs and they mention Y-type or shoulder harness. Can you elaborate on what you have? Also, does it mean the stock belt is available to use, or is it removed in installing the Simpson (I wouldn't think the Simpson would be "street legal")?

Thanks.

I use the lap belts off road only. For 2 reasons:
1. Much more comfortable off road. They don't lock and can be put back on when the stock belt would be locked.

2. I was able to get out of them in about 1 second. Pressure doesn't effect the abilty to release.

Seth,
I'm glad you came out OK. No fun! Been there! Schit happens when you're having fun and taking chances. I went up the other side of El Hill to avoid an arguement with my smarter half. That side looked like fun though!
Hmmm, after that thread on where and how we drive, you roll your Jeep and twist up your axles, hmmmm, goes to show you, don't argue with TJRON!
I know that's mean but I just couldn't help it.
I hope all turns out ok!
Ron

I believe your statement was that I don't wheel hard enough. I guess I proved otherwise...

Ron, thanks for the sentiments...

William,
This is going to be a busy week for me rebuild wise. I'm picking up nearly all the parts for the front clip on monday (Windshield, hood, grille, Bumper, steering) I'm going to try and get them ALL installed this week.

I'm heading to a wedding on the 31st (Friday) and want to drive my jeep on the street before I leave.

You're welcome to come by any afternoon. I'll be in the garage.
Thanks.
Seth
