my 1st tow rig.
Heh baby.! Just drove home my first offical tow rig. 1999 chevy 3500 with the 454. Only 1650$. All it needs is a new exaust manifold, the old one cracked.
Anyone know any good options for replacement? I here the 454's hd problems with the manifolds. But for the price i could not pass it up. |

Until about a year ago, I drove my Jeep to every trail. Now that I have a tow rig I'm spoiled. The truck is so much more comfortable, especially when it's cold and raining, and it even gets better fuel mileage towing the Jeep than I do driving it to the trail....gotta love the Cummins.
Check with Hooker, Hedman, etc. for a set of emissions legal headers. Heck, I don't think an '89 1-ton will have an AIR pump, so you might be able to get away with a good set of shorty headers, which might bolt up to the factory exhaust with little or no mods. If you really want to stick with factory style manifolds, check with Carquest, NAPA, or similar parts houses for an aftermarket replacement. StealthTJ had to replace his TJ exhaust manifold and I was surprised that it was available from someone besides the dealer, and the price was very reasonable, too. Edited fur horibule speling. |

I was in feer of the 454 roumers but after driving it home, i love it. It does 4mpg better than my jeep. so im already ahead of the game . And like you said comfort. I herd about that word once. But thought that was just roumers. Never thought id have a veichle with, are you ready for this, AC thats right air. I just might sleep in it tonight. |

I have to agree I love having a tow vehicle. My YJ is very drivable to and from the trail but the truck (96 F-250 PSD) gets better gas mileage and is much more comfortable to drive. Several times I have towed friends home while they drove my YJ because they broke.

Make sure that the exhaust shop that puts the headers gives you a sticker for the smog check. Don't ask me what kind of sticker. All I know is that I was hustled at the smog check station that I didn't have a sticker for my aftermarket muffler (!). At least ask about it. Sorry I don't more clear information.

Boy all you Cal boys seem to have disputes with the smog boys.
Guess they will love me. Seeing how I am from KANSAS and all. You know where I come from we could legally drive a tractor too town if the (pickem up n truckem) was broke down. |

You may want to consider this set of Hooker Headers, or another brand that these folks sell.
Prices range from ~$248-$698. http://www.truckperformance.com/prod...EADERS&sf6=2WD |

Congrats on the tow rig! Other than the gas milage issue, you'll be pretty happy with the 454. I've got over 160,000 on mine, still running strong.
Try a wrecking yard for a manifold. There were lots of these trucks made, so it shouldn't be too hard to find. If you opt for headers, I would go with Doug Thorleys, or maybe the HPC coated Hedmans.

I have Thorleys on my 86 Suburban. Make sure you get a decent muffler or else it will be loud if you opt for headers. Also, get them coated if you can afford it - they tend to get real ugly looking if they are not coated. Mine used to be chrome
