Film Development and Free High Res Digitizing at Sam's Club

Hi folks, In getting ready for a short trip to Vernal, UT to watch a friend compete in the RCAA event there I discovered something you might be interested in.

If you bring your film into Sam's Club to be developed they now will digitizes then in high resolution for free.

They post them on a web site and give you the web site ID and password so you can get to them.

After 30 days they delete your pictures, but until then you can download them or move them anywhere you want.

My original plan was to bring my digital camera and lap top computer out there with me, so I could download my pictures every night.

Now all that stuff is staying home. I will bring a good 35mm camera and let Sam's Club do the work for me.

That is pretty sweet. York and Mystic had free promotions on that sort of thing recently, and now they have it for a reasonable additional charge.

I?ve tried these scanning services, and they are ok, however there are some things to watch for:

- If you order the scanning services, it may take much longer to process your film
- Browsing the pictures on the web site may be very slow, so your best bet is to download the roll on your computer first, and then go from there
- The so called High Resolution, is not very high in comparison to a drum-scan, or even a semi-decent home film scanner
- You have to realize limitations of batch scanning. You can get much, much better results if you scan each picture individually, adjusting and tweaking the settings (that eats up a lot of time, but its the only way to go if you demand the best results)

Thanks for your tips on this, I don't know too much about photography.

I'm going to give them a shot for this trip and see how it works out. (Free is hard to turn down. At least for me!)

I found out that "Hi-Res" is good enough to get 5X7 photo quality pictures out of. (So they can sell you more prints if you want them) . But I have no clue what that really means in the way of pixels.

I think they will be good enough for display on the web or my PC.

When I get back and get the film developed I'll send you a link to them. I'd be interested in your opinion on the quality of the free digitizing.
