Next year I'd like to build a website. What soft ware is needed for page building, and what are average cost for domains, etc? What are monthly fee's?

I realize this is on the "lame" side of web building, but I use MS Frontpage. It comes with Office Professional and is really easy to use. The thing about building web pages is that if you don't do it on a regular basis you can forget the code really easy. Frontpage makes it idiot proof. I know it doesn't do "everything".

I use Photoshop and Illustrator for any graphic stuff.

Spending $500 for high end web software so it can be used for a small personal site is kind of like putting D60s under your Jeep so you can run forest service roads.

(geez....I forgot, some folks do that....BAD EXAMPLE!)

William, I'm with Jeff, but I don't think it is lame. Nothing wrong with MS FrontPage. Every tool has its place and for what you are looking to do, it does a fine job. Even if you don't have the newer MS Office package which includes FrontPage, you can purchase it for around $100 (probably cheaper on e-bay).

I am forced to use Adobe GoLive! at work and I really hate it! Nothing in it conforms to the normal look and feel of a Windows application. I use FrontPage on my personal site and am much more productive when doing so.

You can also design basic pages in MS Word and then save them as html files.

I use a program called Arachnophilia - it's a pretty basic editor but I like it because it color codes the html code so I can see quickly if I've turned off all of the tags that I've turned on. It's downloadable and free (last time I checked.)

If you have not done this before then I would suggest MS front page as well, but if you do go with it be sure and check with your web host and make sure that they support MS Front Page Extensions.
Don.

On hosts William - I just use Yahoo. They may not be the least expensive in town, but I'm relatively sure they'll be in business for a while. They support Front Page.

If you are making a more casual website and don't care about having a specific URL, you should host with whoever you get your high speed internet at home with (assuming you have that). Cox gives me a certain amount of bandwidth for having a website.

My website www.rockjunkies.com was built using Postnuke

I find it's pretty easy to manage, and fairly customizable. There are several modules available, like forums and photo galleries and stuff. And it's all freely available online.

Unix/Linux hosting with PHP and MySQL (I sell it cheap enough, www.RIS-Tulsa.com )
PHP-Nuke (free, www.php-nuke.org )
Macromedia's Dreamweaver (ask me)
JASC's Paintshop Pro (ask me)

Don't click this!

Thats really all you need for a pretty badass website.

I will say that frontpage is IMHO the devil and should never be used under any circumstances. Dreamweaver is just as user friendly (if not moreso) and uses all standard tags and supports CSS and javascript with the MX version supporting PHP as well.

i use/used Frontpage also. what it did for me was plug and play easy to get me in the door so to speak. i could understand the tags, placement, etc.

once you get the hang of it, you can start using notepad. just my personal site, nothing commercial or major.

I am sorry William. I removed the modification. I don't have the time or desire to go into thin sociological details on why things like that are popping up.

thanks.

i've been using Dreamweaver for several years now. At first i was only Textpad kinda guy, but once you get to more complex sites, with multiple pages Dreamweaver makes it easy to maintain and edit them. And you can always switch to code view and write html just like you would in Textpad.

What you have to be careful of is deamweaver will automatically close your tags if you don't specify it not to, this can cause major issues in a site built on the PHP include command like forums and CMSs usually have.

William,

If you start off with a CMS (like PHP-Nuke) first you never need to worry about your organization of data other then images. RIGHT now since I am converting my old site I am constantly getting errors to my visitors due to dead links, moved files and the like. I actually have a complete duplicate of my tech galleries so my forum posts will stay good until I have redirected for each on of them.
