Big Deer Population In Orange Co

Millie and I Spent Saturday doing single track at the Whiting Ranch off El Toro road in Orange Co and came up on 6 deer feeding ( should have had Stu and his camera with me ) Also there was a old indian cave we could not get to because trail leading to it was closed off. Im sure this is no big deal to anyone else but in Los Angeles you just don't see this every day.

Yep, pics would have been nice.

A well kept secret is how many live on base at MCAS Miramar, just north of downtown San Diego. I lived & worked on base for several years and saw dear just about everyday, especially on the airfield which is where I worked.

Next time you go, take the camara along.

Those look like jackasses, not deer. Based on the long snout and the ears.

Or are you just calling them "AZ Deer" for the heck of it.

Deer at it's best is always a little gaimie. If you are in the vicinity of Yucca Valley and find the appropriate rib place, ostrich will give you a taste that you won?t soon forget. Trust me!

actually in many cases your absolutely correct. certain cuts of venison are indeed gaimie (sp?). the tenderloins and chops are delicious though. the stuff I brought Saturday was a kind of venison sausage stick, kinda like a slim jim. I think everyone that tryed it enjoyed it, atleast no one spit it out that I saw.

You can make all venison taste gamey if you leave the bone and fat in and on.

Remove all of that and you have a sweeter tasting version of high quality lean beef. I've hand butchered about 50 of them and we always de-boned and trimmed all the fat off.

The worst venison I ever tried to eat was a commercially butchered roast that they cut with the meat band saw. It took the small particles of bone and fat and evenly distributed it across the meat.

After it was cooked, you could smell the gaminess across the room. Practically inedible and could probably give Sergey's 'roo a run for the money on which one tasted like it had the worst diet of toxic waste.

I've butchered a while growing up in Minnnesota and ate it all the time. The only bones that were around when we got done where in the dog's mouth. We trimmed and deboned everything and it was the best tasting meat I've ever had. Given that they "lived" in an agricultural area, there was no wild taste to the meat....they ate the same thing that our beef cattle grazed on.
